Today, I get some instruction on how to give instruction on being artistic to 1st graders. It's the so very cool ArtCorp program here in San Diego and I'm teaching about a yet-to-be-named visual artist in a 2-part lesson starting next week.

I'll post a few Things via the camera phone and maybe a audio piece or two during the day and we'll see if you can just hang out at this page and see the updates as they happen during the day. I think for now you'll need to hit the refresh button on your browser everytime you get the inkling to see something New...we'll try to automate this refresh soon...

I'm hoping to kind a visual artist insipred by a musical artist (or vice-versa) so I can add some music to the art lessons. Any thoughts out there would be great.

The Technical explanation: The little content box up there is using a couple of RSS-enabling / consuming tools: Feedroll and Rollup. The little box that should update whenever I post pictures using the camera phone or audio using the phone and the Audblog record / post service. The content in the box is taken from two sites updated separatly, whose RSS is Rolled-up together and then displayed asa Feedroll. More on this later...I must make lunches before the troups get going...later...

Jon MayerJon Mayer, Jazz pianist and bopmeister, will be Live on The New Jazz Thing with Vince Outlaw tonight, Thursday, March 18, 2004, at 7:00 pm PT, on Jazz 88, KSDS San Diego, 88.3 FM and world-wide webcast at http://KSDS-FM.org.

Jon's new album, The Classics (scroll down that link for reviews), explores his interpretations of the more and less recognizable melodies from Jazz's be-bop branch. It most definitely swings and sings! We'll talk about the inspiration for the tunes and if there particularly definitive versions (other than his!) of these tunes that may have been models for where he went with them. I'm also interested to hear about what some of the original bop pianists 'had' that inspired and influences his playing today. And, as always, we want to find out what he's up to these days and other New Things he may have up his sleeve for the future.

Tune in to The New Jazz Thing Live on Jazz 88 each and every Thursday evening from 6 to 9 pm PT for the Newest Jazz Music, News, and Conversation.

LA Times: Group Races To Save The Cradles of Jazz (free, yet still stupid, registration required)...

"In a campaign long on ambition and short on funding, music aficionados and historians have targeted for preservation nearly 2,000 New Orleans-area buildings connected to the birth of jazz [~] from the childhood homes of its pioneers to the mammoth halls where they performed.

By poring over old phone books and dusty property records, through word of mouth and even the stubs of timeworn rent checks, researchers and historians have identified more than 600 homes and 1,300 performance halls linked to the early days of jazz, said Jack Stewart, a New Orleans resident who owns a home restoration company and is a jazz historian leading the project. Many more buildings are expected to be identified in coming months.

You go!

Some great quotes from Ben Ratliffe on the progress of Dave Holland's Big Band (as heard last week in NYC) as it moves to meet the promise of the bassists quintet,

"The quintet is one of the best jazz bands, with its own rhythmic and structural language and its own sparkling group sound. Under Mr. Holland's guiding vision, each member is as important as the next. But the 13-piece big band, with its tight arrangements, adds great layers of harmony and color. The arrangements lean on what's already there in the last 50 years of jazz orchestras, the line that forms the current mainstream of the language, stretching from Ellington to late Basie to Gil Evans to Thad Jones. The underlying engine is about as contemporary as jazz gets.

The big band is starting to sound more integrated, like uniquely large-ensemble music, not just a quintet with add-ons."

...and this one summing it up...

"This last part was the band at its best: streamlined, joyous orchestral funk with jazz nuance and harmonic vocabulary."

I also found the language that Ben used kind of interesting...

"The saxophonist Chris Potter, the trombonist Robin Eubanks and the vibraphonist Steve Nelson [~] regular members of the quintet [~] all made impressive showings, but the saxophonist Mark Gross was dynamic and energetic on two separate solos in "A Rio.""

What's with all the 'The's? Why not "saxophonst CP, trombonist RE and vibraphonist SN..."?

Just curious...

P.S. Dave is playing with Herbie, Wayne, and Brian on the Sunday, 6/20/04, session of this year's Playboy Jazz Festival.

We'll be chatting about Joel's #1 Jazz Release, Don't Explain, which teams him up with high-school friend (and TNJT regular) pianist Brad Mehldau. We'll talk a little more about how the tunes on the disc came together and have Joel give us some insight on a few of the choice tunes that we'll play on the show tonight. We'll also get into what's next for Joel, who has been touring with vocalist Jane Monheit.

Some quick links for background...

  • Micael P. Gladstone: Don't Explain: "Frahm has chosen standards and jazz standards with a minimal number of original compositions so that the listener can easily gauge his performance with the many artists who have recorded tunes like [base "]Don't Explain[per thou], [base "]Smile[per thou] and [base "]Get Happy[per thou]. I don't hear any of the swagger of his tenor sax debut recording but that isn't what is called for here. His musical persona on the ballads is akin to Lee Konitz, although on tenor sax, both introspective and inherently swinging. Likewise Frahm's use of soprano sax on the Lennon-McCartney [base "]Mother Nature's Son[per thou], [base "]East of the Sun[per thou] and [base "]Smile[per thou] displays probing lines rather than bold declarative sentences."
  • AllAboutJazz.com: Jim Santella: Don't Explain:"Together, Joel Frahm and Brad Mehldau interpret six jazz standards, one familiar Ornette Coleman fixture, one memorable pop classic, and one original composition. Each piece is delivered with a straightforward approach, keeping the central melody in focus while venturing just a bit off the beaten path to express personal feelings about the subject. Frahm moves fluidly through his instruments[base '] ranges, flipping keys as fast as necessary in order to have his say. Mehldau provides a warm backdrop for the saxophonist and contributes delicate essentials. His clarion calls and glistening harmonic tools provide a sparkle."
  • JazzWeek.com - Ed Trefzger: Joel Frahm's Musical Reunion: "After Frahm and Mehldau graduated from high school, opportunities to play together came infrequently. Frahm graduated from The Manhattan School of Music, was accepted into Betty Carter[base ']s rigorous Jazz Ahead workshop, and worked with Maynard Ferguson, Larry Goldings, and the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Frahm was also a 1996 Thelonious Monk competition semi-finalist." And a quote from Joel on the out-of-town setting for this Palmetto recording: "[base "]It[base ']s such a beautiful, bucolic setting. Going out there is always such a blast because you can record there and then go out with the trees for a while. That actually to me has a lot to do with the vibe out there,[per thou] said Frahm. [base "]When we went out there to record it was really nice, because it was just me and Brad and Matt [~]there weren[base ']t a lot of distractions. The thing about working out there, I think the real advantage is just that sense of lack of pressure. I don[base ']t get that studio feeling that I get sometimes in New York when I go in to do a record. Everyone[base ']s a little on edge to get all the takes they want in. Going out there always seems like more of an experience and less of a job.[per thou]
